We spent the afternoon in Charlottesville at the Downtown Mall, one of the best walkable retail areas in Virginia. Places like that remind you what a strong local vibe feels like: people out together, small shops thriving, community energy everywhere.

As Dogwood & Deathcap grows, we want a physical space that captures that same feeling, a storefront that reflects who we are, gives back to the community, and becomes a place people want to gather.

So this was a little research trip.

A chance to learn, take notes, and get inspired for what our own brick-and-mortar could be someday.

On the trip we discovered several must visit/unique shops at the downtown mall in Charlottesville. Our criteria for determining our favorites are in this order: customer service, authentic atmosphere, uniqueness of products.

These are not ranked top to bottom, nor a specific order that we recommend. Websites are linked in the title.

Vintage décor and women’s clothing from across the decades, including several stunning dresses from the 1940s. They also had beautiful vintage home pieces.

No photos, I was too busy petting their dog, Ollie, who completely stole the show.

A warm, earthy shop with an impressive selection of herbs, spices, teas, and crystals. The energy here is calm, grounded, and intentional. Easy to lose track of time.

A dispensary with great vibes and genuinely excellent customer service. Loved the vintage propaganda posters and the comfortable lounge area. The environment felt welcoming, not transactional.

A well-curated vintage shop with clothing for both men and women, plus mid-century décor and everyday-use vintage items. A solid stop for anyone hunting for character pieces.

A book lover’s haven. Their selection of botanical prints and antique maps immediately caught my attention. I didn’t get to dive deep into the books, dinner was calling, but what I did see made it clear this is a place I’ll return to with more time. Also did not take any photos of this one.
